In 1859, Martha, Mary, and Anna Parker fled enslavement with Henry, settling in Pontiac in 1860. Martha married David Jackson in 1861; Anna died around 1862 after Henry left Pontiac; and the Jacksons’ only surviving child, David Jr., was born in 1867. Mary lived with Martha and David, and the three were well known through involvement in Pontiac’s A.M.E. Church and in public celebrations of the 15th Amendment. After David Sr. died in 1885, Mary and Martha lived together until Mary’s death in 1903. Martha died in 1906. Mary, Martha, and David are buried together at Oak Hill Cemetery.
